Bryce Hospital History

At the September 2011 meeting of the Francis Marion Chapter NSDAR members were given a delightful history of Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Mr. Steve Davis, Historian of the Alabama Department of Mental Health, told the ladies in attendance how this hospital began.  National advocates for mental health like Dorothea Dix lobbied for a state hospital in Alabama.  Soon a young 27 year old doctor took over and the stories of Dr. Peter Bryce and his wife Ellen Clarkson Bryce inspired all.

You can read more about the history of Bryce Hospital at the Alabama Department of Mental Health's website.
