Constitution Week 2009

This year marks the 222nd anniversary of the completion of the U.S. Constitution. The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the DAR. In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. Today, the Constitution stands as an icon of freedom for people around the world.

The daughters of Francis Marion Chapter celebrated Constitution Week with a visit to Trinity Presbyterian School’s 5th grade class. There Francis Marion Daughters Sally Furlow, Shannon Torode and Leigh Wiatt shared facts about the Constitution, gave out small copies and played a game similar to the popular television show “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader.”

The Montgomery Regent’s Council also met with Montgomery mayor Todd Strange while he signed a proclamation declaring September 17-23 Constitution Week in the city.
