Chapter History

Francis Marion Chapter
Organized by Mrs. Phares Coleman
February 15, 1904

"Francis Marion Chapter is named for that illustrious South Carolina Brigadier General known as 'The Swamp Fox', whose exploits in the War for Independence from England are too well known to need repeating.

The aims of Francis Marion chapter throughout the years can best be summed up as follows: historical appreciation of the past, patriotic service in the present, and educational training for the future. Our main achievements are participation in naturalization courts, presentation of medals and awards in American history essay contests, presentation of good citizenship pins to senior boys and girls in high school, ROTC medals, financial and material aid to Kate Duncan Smith School and the National and State Societies, marking historic spots, and copying and preserving old records for future generations."

From a History of Francis Marion Chapter DAR, written by Mrs. Thomas Bowen Hill Jr., in 1989, in part quoting from an earlier history written in 1964 by Mrs. Elmer W. Norris.
