Community Service Award Winner


Colonel Nelson Smith, Jr. is retired from the United States Army. He has volunteered in many areas from mentoring students through the WE Mentor program; helping in the transition of ex-offenders from prison to a successful reintegration into the local community through the Renascence, Inc. program; to helping over and over again with recovery efforts in New Orleans following Katrina; in assisting in the military community with needs of retirees and their widows, and he has sponsored 13 international officers and their families while they were at Maxwell Air Force Base. Not only did he head numerous recovery teams to New Orleans after Katrina, but he was instrumental in raising monies to purchase a truck to be given to help in New Orleans during the recovery effort.
In addition to receiving the Community Service Award from the Francis Marion Chapter he was also awarded Second Place winner in the State competition for the Community Service Award. Colonel Smith was honored at the May luncheon for the Francis Marion Chapter.
