ASDAR State Regent Mrs. Marguerite Poole Horton spoke at the February 2012 Francis Marion Chapter NSDAR luncheon. Her topic was about what it means to be a DAR member.
Regent Horton asked each member what came to mind when they thought of the DAR. Many people wonder if it's just a service club, social or genealogical. It's actually all of the above and the way Regent Horton described the DAR was that it was "a network of women who care about our society and each other."
The Daughters of the American Revolution is an orginization you can join because of something someone else did for you. We recognize what our ancestors did to create a new country and break away from the old. Patriotism is promoted because the DAR is proud of our country. The DAR is responsible for the U.S. government's recognition of Constitution week and this year is the 225 anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. A replica of the 1787 flag was donated to each state to be displayed during the week of celebration.

The DAR also raises awareness of historic properties and graveyards. The DAR's own Constitution Hall is the largest auditorium in Washington D.C. Over 100 years ago a group of women set out to raise the funds for that building and did remarkably well despite naysayers. Now the building is in need of major repair and it's up to this generation to restore it. The Daughters of The American Revolution also contributed to the World War II Memorial and to the refurbishment of The Statue of Liberty. Veterans are recognized often and in 2011 the DAR gave to veterans who lost their homes in the April tornadoes around the south.
Education is also a top priority of the DAR. Students with the same values are recognized and rewarded. Scholarships and donations to schools such as the Kate Duncan Smith school in North Alabama are ways that DAR helps educate children.
The members of Francis Marion Chapter were encouraged to use their resources such as the state and national level DAR websites to gain an understanding of this organization. Mrs. Horton also mentioned that she had a blog for members to read and learn from. You can click here to read the Regent's blog.
